Great piece! Good character design, good pose, and good choice of colors. Looks really neat. :)

DO you have a tutorial or one I could learn from so I can color like this too?! D:

Okay. Well I'm a HUUUGE Spice and Wolf fan and I absulutely LOVE the artist and the way he colors his drawings in the Opening and Ending themes. I've always wanted to learn how to color like that. Your skills remind me of that.

I just looked at the piece again and I can see for the most part what you did but I wanna know if I'm right first. To see if I have the right idea.. Leik.. Lineart>base colors> (pick a shadow color darker than base color>Do shades>Highlights (white lines)> textures (design on the top piece)> and changing the lineart base color. Was that it? D:

If it is, I'm wondering why it looks so radiant and lively! 8D

i think the parts that your missing is not the technique, it's the color choices. If your just mixing in black to make your darker tones you won't get a vibrant look. (you can actually just find a photo you like and sample the colors right off of it! it's a great way to actually see what's going on) A lot of times you'll see that if the picture is kinda reddish in tone the darker skin tones are actually purple! Those types of things will give your colors more vibrancy. (and all "color" is really just light! so if your image is lit by a certain color it will effect everything!) seriously photos are a great way to start (and sample from professional photos that have taken careful consideration to the lighting at first... learn from pros before taking that knowledge elsewhere)
I hope that helps a bit, for a lot of these images, I colored them with really vibrant (what i call 'candy' colors) like if you take the normal colors it would have been and heighten the vibrancy of the colors.

"Candy Colors". That's a good name for them. They are definitely the colors that seem to "pop". I don't know how to make a color "pop" like that though. Or rather, find these candy colors. I'm so used to using dead desaturated tones. Would you mind if I sampled a few of your works along with those from say, Corbis? I'm sure they have a lot of professional pictures on that site. Your advice is great. I don't expect to see improvements right away but it does give me some new material to work with. :]

yeah go right ahead and sample away. When you begin to break down how an artist is thinking about what they are doing, rather than just repeating the motions, that's when you'll really start to improve by leaps and bounds.
(so i think it's great to deconstruct in any way possible art that you find appealing 8D )

Yeah, seeing that I'm not in school for this stuff (oh gawd how I'd love to school for it) it's pretty hard when you don't know your left from your right. So thanks for giving me a push in the right direction. :meow: Oh and I went batshit and downloaded practically everything you uploaded for studying purposes. :plotting:
